Cedar Key Business Spotlight

Discover Mainstreet Mercantile: The Ultimate Gift Shop in Cedar Key

Stop in for a variety of items to enjoy!

This spotlight is brought to you by Mainstreet Mercantile.

If you’re planning a trip to our favorite island getaway, you already know that Cedar Key, Florida, is all about slow paces, stunning coastal views, and unforgettable local charm. But no stroll down our historic streets is complete without stopping by one of the town’s absolute gems: Mainstreet Mercantile.

Located at 497 2nd Street, Mainstreet Mercantile is more than just a shop - it’s a must-visit Cedar Key tradition. Whether you are looking to beat the Florida heat, satisfy your sweet tooth, or find the perfect keepsake to remember your trip, this welcoming storefront has something for everyone.

A Piece of Cedar Key History

Before you even step inside, take a moment to look around. Mainstreet Mercantile is housed in the Lutterloh Building, a beautifully preserved structure dating all the way back to 1872. If those walls could talk, they’d have stories to tell.

The building was reimagined and restored by local realtors Caryn Stephenson and Mendy Allen as part of the Carmen Project - a local effort dedicated to restoring historic buildings in downtown Cedar Key. The result is a space that feels rooted in Cedar Key’s past while being very much alive in its present. (They also restored For Shore, located right next door.)

Standing strong for over 150 years, this building has survived historic hurricanes, witnessed the boom and bust of the old cedar pencil mills, and watched Cedar Key transform from a major shipping port into the quiet, artistic haven it is today. Walking across its floors feels like a step back in time. The old-world architecture and classic storefront windows and doors perfectly preserve the nostalgic, small-town essence of old Florida.

Soft Serve, Candy & Fudge: The Ultimate Sweet Treats

If the history doesn’t hook you, the aromas definitely will. Mainstreet Mercantile is a great spot for a cool treat on the island, specializing exclusively in delicious soft serve ice cream.

Keeping things simple and high-quality, they feature one or two rotating flavors of the day. Vanilla, Chocolate, Dole Whip, Mango…It’s the perfect, nostalgic way to cool off after a sunny afternoon of exploring. Want to mix it up? Ask for the daily flavors twisted together!

But the sweet treats don’t stop there. Right alongside their cool soft serve sits their beautiful fudge counter. Bursting with rich flavor, the decadent, velvety fudge is worthy of a taste (or two). From classic chocolate to creative seasonal flavors, it’s impossible to walk out with a box to take home. And don’t miss the chocolate covered espresso beans, my husbands favorite!

Gourmet Pantry & Specialty Food Items

Beyond the immediate sweet treats, Mainstreet Mercantile is a fantastic stop for foodies looking to stock their kitchens. They feature a wonderful selection of specialty pantry food items that make excellent gifts (or personal kitchen upgrades).

Be sure to browse their shelves for:

  • Artisanal Bread Mixes: Easy-to-Make, gourmet mixes that bring the comforting aroma of fresh-baked bread into your home.

  • Flavorful Spices & Rubs: Perfect for elevating your next seafood catch or backyard barbecue.

  • Specialty Syrups & Condiments: Delicious, high-quality syrups to drizzle over morning pancakes or mix into your favorite drinks.

Specialty syrups and honey.

Injured Pelican Rescue

On our way to the Cedar Key Book Club meeting last Thursday, James and I stumbled upon an injured pelican in the parking lot near the Dock St. bridge. We immediately reached out to Maureen at W.R.E.N. (Wildlife and Rehabilitation Education Network, 352-477-0057). While I stayed to keep an eye on the pelican, James went to fetch Maureen and a crate. Working together, we managed to remove a fishing hook and cut away the fishing line tangled around its wing and leg. With teamwork, Maureen and James got the pelican into the crate, and Maureen took it to be transported off the island to a bird rescue. This was a successful bird rescue, as you’ll see in the slideshow below.

Don’t cut the line! Call 352-477-0057 for help.

On Saturday morning, Cedar Key School celebrated its graduation, and what a memorable day it was! Despite a heavy thunderstorm rolling in right as the ceremony was about to begin, the community showed up in full force to cheer on the graduates. The event was fantastic, with many students proudly receiving scholarships and certificates. It was truly a graduation to remember!

Republic of Cedar Key Book Launch

Local readers and neighbors gathered at the historic Island Hotel on Saturday night to celebrate the long-awaited launch of The Republic of Cedar Key, the final installment in Michael Presley Bobbitt’s post-apocalyptic trilogy. Following his previous island-inspired novels, Godspeed, Cedar Key and Forever, Cedar Key, this highly anticipated release wraps up the thrilling, character-driven saga of local survival twenty-five years after a global collapse. The evening offered attendees the perfect opportunity to chat with the local playwright, novelist, and "Clambassador" himself, grab a signed copy of the new book, and raise a glass to a Southern-fried tale deeply rooted in the history, strength, and heart of our close-knit coastal community.

Grab a copy at Mainstreet Mercantile or online.
