To do: The Cedar Key Public Library is a charming, historic gem tucked away in the heart of the Cedar Key community. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century building that once served as a general store and boarding house, the library manages to balance its rustic, "Old Florida" aesthetic with a surprisingly robust collection and modern services. With its creaky wood floors, towering shelves, and high ceilings, the space feels more like a cozy living room than a municipal building, making it a favorite retreat for both locals and travelers seeking a quiet spot to read or catch up on work. During February and March, The Friends of the Library host a lecture series on Thursdays at 5:00pm and Saturdays at 10:30am. Speakers use the upstairs community room for public talks. All are welcome.

Hours: Monday: 10am - 4pm; Tuesday: 10am - 6pm; Wednesday: 10am - 4pm; Thursday: 10am - 4pm; Friday: 10am - 4pm; Saturday: 10am - 3pm.

Why It’s Special

  • Historic Architecture: The building is a key part of the Cedar Key Historic District, preserving the coastal character of the town.

  • Community Hub: Beyond books, it serves as a vital resource for public Wi-Fi, local history archives, and community gatherings.

  • Books, DVD’s, Puzzles, Magazines, and more: Library card holders can check out any of these items from the collection. Visitors can select from free books that have been donated. The Friends of the Library have a “book store” upstairs where items are available by donation.
