Important Visitor Information & Safety Tips

Because Seahorse Key is a protected natural wildlife refuge, visitors should prepare for a primitive outdoor experience. Please keep the following in mind for a safe visit:

  • Challenging Terrain: Trails leading to the light station and beach are steep, unpaved, and uneven.

  • Hurricane Recovery Areas: Recent storm impacts have caused significant beach erosion and damaged trees throughout the island. Please use caution and stay on designated trails.

  • Dock Safety: Use extra caution when loading and unloading vessels at the floating docks.

  • What to Pack: Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, and weather-appropriate clothing. Amenities on the island are extremely limited.

  • Weather-Dependent: This event relies on safe sea conditions. Check local marine forecasts ahead of time, as schedule changes or cancellations may occur.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Cedar Key Light Station for a day of nature, Florida history, and island exploration! Additional open house dates will be announced later this year.

Lighting of the Cedar Key Light Station

Cedar Key Light Station

In the evening on July 3rd, gather with friends at the corner of G Street for a rare event: the brief lighting of the Cedar Keys Light Station. Decommissioned in 1915, the historic lighthouse now serves as a University of Florida marine laboratory dormitory. Because it sits within a protected national wildlife refuge, the island is strictly closed to the public for most of the year. When the switch is flipped to illuminate its replica fourth-order Fresnel lens, it will offer a brilliant, fleeting glimpse into Cedar Key's seafaring past.

It doesn't get much better than celebrating Independence Day with the exact food that put our little slice of the Nature Coast on the map! When the Cedar Key Aquaculture Association sets up at City Park for the 4th of July, you are getting the absolute gold standard of farm-raised shellfish. These aren't just any clams; they are pulled right out of our local waters by the families who have spent generations transitioning Cedar Key into a top producer of clams in the country.

Grab a spot at a picnic table or set up your lawn chair on the grass. You can eat your fill and watch the sand sculptures being built on the beach.

  • Games for Everyone: Try your hand at the "Clam Hole" game set up for anyone who wants to play, or dive into a round of bobbing for apples.

  • Give Back While You're There: The Lions Club will also be collecting used eyeglasses and cell phones for their community recycling programs. If you have old pairs or devices collecting dust at home, please consider bringing them down to the park to donate!

📌Tip for Visitors: With events scattered from the park to the water, the best way to get around the island on the 4th is by golf cart or bicycle. Come out early, support our local organizations, and enjoy a safe and happy 4th of July in Cedar Key!

🎆Cedar Key Fourth of July Fireworks: Presented by the Chamber of Commerce

This year is extra special! As our nation honors the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America, we want to make the annual Cedar Key fireworks show the biggest, brightest, and best one yet.

Catching the Fireworks: Quick Tips

To make sure everyone has an incredible view and a stress-free evening, here is what you need to know about the big show this 4th of July:

  • The Launch Spot: The fireworks will be let off across from the pier. For the best views, grab a spot along the beachfront or in City Park, set up your lawn chairs, and settle in before dark.

  • Parking Smart: Please park only in designated parking areas around town. Keeping the roads clear ensures our local emergency vehicles can move quickly if they need to.

  • Pack It In, Pack It Out: We love our island and want to keep it pristine. Please remember to take home all of your trash, wrappers, and sparkler boxes at the end of the night so our island stays beautiful.

Enjoy the show, drive safe, and let’s keep Cedar Key clean!

How You Can Support the Cedar Key Fireworks Fund

To make this landmark Semi-quincentennial celebration happen, we need your help.

The Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce is officially asking for your support to help fund our annual fireworks display over the water—a beloved holiday tradition enjoyed by local residents and Gulf Coast visitors alike.

Every dollar donated goes directly toward bringing our community together for an unforgettable night of patriotism, family-friendly fun, and spectacular fireworks over the Gulf of Mexico.
